Only in Taipei…

Would a stranger come up to you when you are tearing due to some dust in your contact and offer eye drops. Since I’m from NYC (the city where no one trusts anyone), I quickly said no thanks and continued to wipe my eye with my tissue. Is it weird that I got freaked about this? Who knows what was in that bottle!

I really think I’ve gained like 10 lbs since I’ve landed in Taipei. Oh yeah, I got a new hair style. I’m not very happy with it (it’s REALLY different). There’s nothing I can do about it now. I’m in a rut. I feel that my vacation is ending too quickly and I don’t want to go back home and back to work! So here I am at my grandma’s apartment updating my website. I guess I will head out and have this famous beef noodle soup near by. Then I’ll head to a big department store so I can enjoy the wonderful A/C.

Toodles!

Day 2 & 3

I’m sorry for not updating sooner, but here is another update!

Wednesday

I woke up early to watch the Yankees game. Then my two aunts and uncle came to visit. My oldest aunt really likes to chat. I gave them their Move Free bottles and then we headed out to Core Pacific Living Mall (京華成) for lunch. The younger aunt was really craving steak, but my older aunt said that I could get that in America (which is actually very true). We ended up at the food court at 11am. I ordered 麻油雞麵. It was pretty good. They were airing the Yankees game for students. I can’t believe just how crazy people are about 王建民.

Anyway, I came back and walked around the food market near my grandma’s apartment. I took a bunch of pictures (just like a tourist). I bought 豬肉干,蓮霧 and 鳳梨. They were so tasty! I will be posting the pictures shortly. Then I had dinner with my family friends at Jimmy’s Kitchen, which is Taipei’s oldest steakhouse. The prices were pretty steep. Each steak was at least $30 US. I was disappointed with my steak because it ended up being very fatty. I couldn’t even finish it because I thought I’d pass out at the table with a heart attack. I didn’t say anything about the food until my friends mentioned that it wasn’t that good for the price we’re paying.

Thursday
I woke up around 8am to watch the Yankees game, but it was postponed due to the weather. I went and bought some delicious breakfast. I bought scallion pancakes (悤油餅) and 燒餅蛋子. It was delicious! I still have some leftovers in the fridge. After resting from my big breakfast, I decided to venture out to Taipei 101 Mall. I went to yet another Mango store. I ended up buying really cheap jeans for $35 and two shirts. It was excellent! I can’t believe their jeans are cheaper than their shirts. It’s pretty weird how they price things there. After shopping, I had my ramen lunch at 101’s famous food court in the basement. There were so many restaurants to choose from, but the ramen looked really good so I ordered it. It was great! I stopped by Page One (this HUGE bookstore) and I read a Taipei travel guide to see if there was anything I missing. I debated about purchasing it, but I decided it wasn’t worth $30.

I left Taipei 101 and took the free shuttle back to the Taipei City Hall MRT station. I took the blue line to Taipei Main Station and then transferred to the red line. I took it to the Shihlin station. There I caught the 304 bus and got off at the last stop, National Palace Museum . I bought a student ticket for NT $50 ($1.51). I joined the 3pm English tour. It was pretty cool. We got to wear headsets. Last time my family went in 2004, we followed the English tour, but this time I was actually part of it. There was only like six people. I learned a lot about jade, bronze and porcelain. It’s pretty amazing what the Chinese people were making over 6,000 years ago! They were so advanced. I left the museum at around 4:45 pm. Then I headed back home. I was lucky enough to be traveling during rush hour. It took awhile to get home on the bus, but it was okay!

I waited for my uncle to come home and then we went to have shabu shabu. Do you guys know the difference between shabu shabu and hotpot? I just found out the difference recently! Shabu shabu is individual pots and hotpot is just one big pot. Dinner was really good and it only cost NT 180 per person. Not too shabby!

Well, now I am heading out with my aunt and uncle to meet my mom’s friend for lunch. We are going to Din Tai Fung to eat juicy dumplings! I’m excited. 

Okay I have to get ready!

P.S. Happy Birthday,Mom! Today is Mooncake Festival! )
