Sunday blues

Hi everyone!

I hope your weekends were eventful. I had a very busy weekend. My little sister, Jessica, came to stay for the weekend. On Saturday, I woke up at 7:45 am so I could go to the Total Body Conditioning. I arrived at my gym all ready to lift weights, and to my disappointment, all the studios were closed. All the cardio machines were put into this one big room and the a/c was not cool enough. I ended up doing 37 minutes on the elliptical and called it a workout. After showering, my sister and I went to the famous Annie’s. I ordered whole wheat banana chocolate chip pancakes. When my meal arrived, I anticipated deliciousness. What I got instead was sour pancakes. After eating 2 of my 3 pancakes, I decided to ask a waiter what the deal was. Apparently, all their whole wheat pancakes have this “sour” taste, but their buttermilk pancakes are regular. Did they mention this on the menu? NO! I’ve made whole wheat pancakes, and they definitely didn’t taste like that. This is the first time I didn’t finish my breakfast! The funniest part was when our dumb waitress said “Wow you guys did a good job!” My sister and I come from a family of food pigs, and it is very rare when we don’t finish a meal at a public restaurant. Jessica’s banana bread French toast wasn’t any better. Hers was over-sweet and gross. I’m sad that Chowhound let me down! I read all these posts recommending this horrid restaurant. It was too expensive and snotty for my taste. I will go the extra six blocks to my favorite EJ’s for brunch from now on! In fact, I went there today for brunch and once again I received a delicious meal.

Anyhow, after our bad brunch, my sister and I headed back to the apartment to relax. About 30 minutes later, we decided that we would head out to Astor Place to have falafel since my sister has never had it before. I decided we’d go to chickpea. Once we arrived there, we ordered two regular falafels which came out to $7.99, which was less than one of our dishes at the forgettable Annie’s. As Jessica bit into the sandwich, I could see her face light up. I knew I had hit the jackpot!

After our delicous lunch, we walked to Union Square to kill sometime before our afternoon movie, “The Lake House“. I gave her a tour of the famous TJ’s. Jessica was surprised to see all the people waiting in line. To be honest, I’ve never seen the line so short, especially on a Saturday! We stopped by all the stores at Union Square (DSW, American Eagle, Shoemania, etc). We then took the L across to the west side.

Did you New Yorkers know that the cheapest theater in NYC is the Loew’s (AMC) theater at 34th and 8th avenue? It’s only $9.50 for a regular ticket! It’s nuts. I think it’s even cheaper than Long Island! Anyway, we bought our tickets and headed to the theater. There were maybe 5 people in our theater. It was like a private screening. I enjoyed the movie a lot. I still have a lot of questions about what could have happened. What if he waited and then crossed the street. What would have happened then?

After our movie, we walked from 8th Avenue to Park Avenue. On the way, we stopped at even more stores. I was tempted to buy these ugly rocketdog shoes, but I resisted. They were pretty comfy though! It’s sad that neither Jessica nor I bought anything yesterday. We headed down to Cooper Union to have some delicious fresh ramen at Men Kui Tei. I warned my sister that we’d be having french fries after dinner. After our tasty noodle treat, we walked towards Pommes Frites. We bought a regular sized fries and it was definitely worth it! We aren’t big fans of the dipping sauces, so we just had it with salt and pepper. It was YUMMY!

So, as you can see, I’ve eaten a lot this weekend. I’m glad I ended this weekend’s food fest with another gym visit. Let’s hope I’ve burn 1/20th of the calories I inhaled on Saturday. ) I can’t believe this weekend is over. Back to work I go. BOO!! (

  1. my dad has cooked whole wheat pancakes my whole life and never once had them be sour. I can’t imagine how gross that would be.

$9.50 is the cheapest ticket in NYC?!? I guess it makes sense when you factor in cost of living. The theater here recently raised their prices from $5.00 to $5.25 and I had to bite my tongue about it. We also have the good old fashion dollar theaters and drive ins!

  2. Wow your tickets are only $5.25? That’s awesome! The regular price in NYC is $10.75. It really blows. I’ve paid up to $12 for a ticket too. I think cheapest ticket price I remember in my life for NY was $7.25. That was back when I was in middle school. I have no idea how much tickets were before since I went with my parents.

Yeah, I have no idea why their whole wheat pancakes were so disgusting.

  3. Yeah, I’m disappointed with chowhound, too. I went to a chowhound-recommended restaurant yesterday and it SUCKED. Ugh. We brought home the leftovers and I will have to re-cook them with more ingredients to make it edible.

The link to pommes frites didn’t work when I tried it, which is just as well since I can’t go there. (

  4. $9.50 is what we pay for a regular price ticket here but they are cheaper if you watch a movie before 6pm. I remember paying $4.25 for a ticket when I was in middle school. I didn’t know NY was so insanely expensive!
