Why GW Bush is a moron
Apr 29th
Yesterday I studied for my last exam for my International Relations class. I was kind of surprised with just how much I have learned from this class. I liked how my professor encouraged discussion and very rarely shared her opinion about the subject up for debate. After we had our debates, she would then share her insight on the subject, and I think that was a very good way in handling a class like this. Basically, for this exam we focused on the war in Iraq and a bunch of decisions GW has made during his presidency. I am aware that GW does not write his own speeches and that he’s just a mere puppet for his party, but I still think he is really hypocritical and stupid. I know in the past American presidents have been hypocritical in decisions, but I guess it’s just the fact that I have studied a lot of the policies and laws that GW has passed and rejected during his term. This is why I feel so much anger directed towards him.
So where should I start? I guess I will discuss the biggest issue in hand: the whole war with Iraq. Bush was so convinced that there were weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, that he ignored the UN and decided to take things in his own hands. He felt that the UN was being too easy with Iraq. For over a decade, the UN has been passing resolutions demanding Saddam Hussein to give in. Each time Saddam has never completely followed their demands. The US felt that rather than use the UN, which was originally established to avoid what caused WWII to ever happen again, it would attack Iraq by itself. The world was too afraid to take any action against Hitler and thought appeasement would be the best policy. Bush was worried that the UN would not be able to get the job done, and therefore decided to take pre-emptive actions towards Iraq. This means he wanted to attack them first. He was determined to attack Iraq alone, which was definitely a sign of unilateralism. By acting alone, Bush has made the US look like a bully (again), and that we can do whatever we please. At the same time, if one country decided to take pre-emptive actions against the US because they felt like it, I’m sure the US would have problems with that. By ignoring well-established international organizations like the UN, Bush is ignoring a system of checks and balances, which contradicts what the US is all about.
Speaking of checks and balances, Bush unsigned the International Criminal Court (ICC) treaty that Clinton originally signed. Why? He and his core constituencies believe that no US citizen should be tried in an UN established court. The ICC will be a court where countries can try criminals for human rights violations such as genocide, rape, war crimes. The main goal of the ICC is to prevent crimes against peace and humanity. It helps end conflicts, end impunity, and deter future crimes. Bush and his people did not want a “loss of sovereignty”. He also did not believe there was a system of checks and balances in this court (when in reality there is a very stringent system in place). The truth is that American soldiers have done a lot of illegal things against UN protocol, and Bush is afraid they will get tried in a world court for these actions. The US and a bunch of rogue states were the only countries who did not sign this treaty. Once again, this makes America look like a stuck up snob.
The last point I’ll make is the Patriot Act. Basically, this act was ratified after 9/11, and Bush believes this act will help fight his “War on Terrorism”. I feel that the name of this act is a misnomer because it clearly violates the Fifth amendment–due process clause. This act allows for the government to take people who they suspect to be involved with terrorism into questioning. Most of these people are aliens, and it has been said over and over by the Supreme Court that aliens have the same rights as citizens in the US. These aliens can also be tried in military tribunals, which are highly secretive and it has different rules. The ordinary rules of evidence no longer work in a military tribunal. The tribunal might declare a defendant guilty even though it has not satisfied of his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Its verdict, including the death penalty, only needs two-thirds of the vote. Other than that, the decision is only reviewed by the president or the secretary of defense. The entire idea of ?innocent until proven guilty? does not apply to military tribunals. If this process was being used in foreign countries, what would Americans think of them? Besides this, the US government now has the right to tap conversations of suspects without giving them any knowledge, which is a clear invasion of privacy.

Three more days
Apr 27th
Wow, I can’t believe classes will be over on Friday. Actually, they end on Thursday for me because I only have one class on Friday, and I don’t have to go. Yay! I can’t wait until Thursday is over. Once again I have two exams, but once they are done and over, I’ll be okay until my last final on May 7th. I can’t wait!
There’s officially 19 more days until I graduate from this school that I once hated. I still don’t have a job, but I did get a call from a recruiting company, and I really think I have a chance in finding a job once I’m back in wonderful New York. I have to keep this entry short because I need to go to class. I will end this with a plea to Joe Torre.
Dear Mr. Torre:
Please get your team together. How can Mike Mussina’s record be 1-4? Please have a big talk with him. Tonight’s game with the Oakland A’s is really important. The Yankees cannot be swept in Yankees Stadium once again. Boston’s sweep is already bad enough. Please don’t add salt to the wound. Also, where is the team? Where are the runs? Why couldn’t the Yankees score 2 runs in more than 6 innings? Please turn around the team before it’s too late.
Yours truly,
Teresa

Your dominant hues are green and blue. You’re smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people’s conflicts well. Your saturation level is lower than average – You don’t stress out over things and don’t understand people who do. Finishing projects may sometimes be a challenge, but you schedule time as you see fit and the important things all happen in the end, even if not everyone sees your grand master plan. Your outlook on life is dark. You’re generally a pessimist and everyone knows it; you’re the one the come to when they don’t want the sunshine blown around, they just want to straight truth. You can miss good things in life if you make up your mind too early though. |
That’s so me
I had a crazy night last night. It was great.
Life without a watch
Apr 20th
My watch battery died on Sunday. I’ve been watchless for about 2 days. I’m going nuts. I can’t stand not having a watch on my wrist. The clock on my cell phone is a poor substitution. Argh.
In other boring Teresa news, I managed to get some bleach on my new Hollister sweatshirt. Good thing I only paid $12.90 for it. The bleach spots don’t look that bad. I think I’ll keep wearing it. The sweatshirt already has holes in it because the whole “worn-out” look is in. I guess the bleach spots will add more character.
The weather is so beautifuli outside. Only a week and a half before classes are officially over for me…forever. I have my dreaded night class today. We have a quiz that will definitely go into my One Tree Hill time. I guess I’ll just hope my friends will tape it. Some crazy stuff is supposed to happen on it. The drama!
I guess I should go to Marketing Communications even though I find the class to be so worthless sometimes. There’s only 4 more classes, so I might as well try to work it with the professor. Maybe he’ll give me bonus points for having an almost perfect attendance.

Globalization
Apr 13th
I think this will be my second entry of the day. You guys are lucky today! So I was sitting in my International Relations class this morning bored. We were discussing the idea of globalization and whether it was a good or bad thing. Actually, I never participate in discussions because I’m intimidated by all the History and Public Policy majors. Half the time I have no idea what they’re talking about. Today we talked about the United States’ foreign policy with China. Since Clinton’s administration, the United States has implemented an engagement policy with China. Basically, this means that the US hopes by having economic relations with China, we will have more leverage to tell them to stop violating the human rights of their people. I think that is a whole lot of garbage. My professor made a good point that the US has a huge trade deficit with China, and that just shows how we don’t have any political/economical leverage over them. Also, China has been getting what it wants from us, so why would they change and still get the same things? To them there’s no need to stop their human rights violations.
I guess I’m kind of biased on this whole topic being that I’m a Taiwanese-American. I visited China three years ago, and I was quite surprised with just how behind it is. I know that its economy has been growing at a rate of 10% a year for almost a decade, yet it doesn’t seem to be a wealthy nation. I guess it still needs a lot of growing. Anyway, I really don’t think the US can influence China in doing something that it doesn’t want to do.
At the end of class, my professor gave out a handout with some numbers from the World Bank. Here are some interesting facts:
- Half the world population lives on less than $2 a day
- One fifth of the world population lives on less than $1 a day
- In the transitional economies of Eastern Europe and Central Asia the number of people living with less than $1 a day has increased 20 times in the last decade
- In South Asia, the number of people living with less than a dollar a day has increased from $474 million to $522 million
- In Europe and Central Asia, the number of poor people has increased from 1.1 million to 24 million in the last decade
- The average income in the richest 20 counries is 37 times larger than the average income in the poorest 20
- The gap between rich and poor countries had increased 20 times in the last 40 years
Isn’t that just crazy? How can anyone live on just $1 a day? That’s how much a 20 oz. bottle of soda costs. Is globalization really worth it? In the end, it just makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. It’s not all about free markets. It’s really about unfair trade. Okay, that’s my 2 cents.
Monday!

2 more days until Carnival. I’m excited. There are going to be a lot of parties. I’m finally going to Buggy. It’ll be my first time during my 4 years here. I’ve been checking the weather, and it looks like it’ll only rain on Saturday. That’s amazing considering that Pittsburgh has very rainy weather. In fact it was raining today. I can’t believe how fast this semester has been going. In a month I’ll be graduating from here and I’ll be thrown in the real world. Ahh. How frightening. At least I know I’m going to Hawaii and Taiwan before I need to find a permanent job. I really have nothing to say.
How many of you watch “I Want a Famous Face”? In this episode, this man wants to transform into a girl. He wants to look like J-Lo. I don’t think he has had his sexchange yet. He got some facial surgery and breast implants. The people on this show are so pathetic. I really don’t know why MTV would promote this. Anyway, I guess I’ll read more about Taiwan and then go to bed. Night!

TGIF!
Apr 9th
Oh how I love Fridays! Today the sun is out and it actually looks like spring. I hope it’s not overly cold. I have one class today: aerobics. Then I plan on going food shopping because I need some more spinach and other stuff perhaps. Oh yeah, I really need more apples and pears. I love fruit. I could just eat fruit all day long if they were filling enough. I was going to do the famous fridayfive, but they haven’t had any for awhile. Oh well! I’m going to go get ready for aerobics. My arms are starting to look sexy hot. Oh yeah, GO YANKEES!!
YAY!!

My FAVORITE drama queen is BACK!! Cici took her time with her new kickass layout. Check it out!
In other news, today was a very busy day. It is kind of crazy how my school is on the news everyday. This whole Tartan thing is just crazy. I can’t believe anyone could let such an offensive issue be printed. I don’t care if it’s satirical, did they think no one would notice? How ridiculous. I find it sad that the issue came out on Thursday when prospective students and their parents were visiting. I have a feeling not a lot of parents will want their children to be attending CMU because of this event.
The weather was beautiful today. It actually felt like Spring. I wore my new Hollister hoodie that I got for $12.90. I’m going to go do some reading. <3
One of these days…
Apr 6th
I had a pretty relaxing weekend. I went to see The Prince and Me. I didn’t have high expectations of it because it’s another chickflick with the typical storyline. I admit I enjoy my share of these movies, but it gets old after awhile. Also, it makes me wish I had a Prince Charming in my life. I guess it’s okay for a girl to dream about that. Besides the movie, I didn’t do much on Saturday.
There has been a lot of talk about my school’s newspaper, The Tartan publishing a very offensive April Fool’s issue where they offend Gays, Lesbians, and African-Americans. There was a rally on Saturday because in one of the comic strips, the N word was used. The editor-in-chief said that he did not see the comic before the newspaper went to press. The person who drew the cartoon said that it does not express his own personal views. What bullshit. If you want to read about this, here is an article on the Post-Gazette. Here is the article on our online newspaper, The Carnegie Pulse. We talked about this issue in my international relations class. The question dealt with the freedom of speech and the effect of culture on society’s actions. I found out that the Admissions office had a bad weekend dealing with all the press about this issues. Parents were coming up to them and asking why they should send their kid to CMU if they allow such things to be printed.
Anyway, rather than go on about this whole thing, I think I’ll go watch Ellen and eat my lunch. Adios!
April showers bring May flowers
Apr 3rd
It’s been a rainy April. Today is the first sunny day. I doubt it’ll stay sunny for the entire day. I definitely won’t be missing this depressing Pittsburgh weather when I pack up all my stuff and go back to New York after graduation. Carnival is in about 2 weeks. N*E*R*D is coming for Carnival. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, Carnival is this huge event at my school. This year, we have two days off because of it. Basically all the sororities and fraternities build these “booths” in our big parking lot. There is a theme, and this year it’s “To be a kid again”. Then we usually have some crappy carnival rides. This is quite popular with the community since all these families come to participate. Carnival is as close as my school being a real party school. There’s always a party each night. It’s kind of nice I guess. This year is going to be greak. I’m really going to try to see buggy .
Anyway, my friends and I are supposed to see either “The Prince & Me”. It got mixed reviews, but I think I’ll like it. I read that “Hellboy” was really good. Too bad the previews made it look bad. I’m not sure if I can convince my friend to see that movie instead our chickflick. Oh well!
